Class Pass
The Wheels school outreach program is one of the many community services offered by the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority and is designed to introduce students to their local transportation system.
What is the Wheels Class Pass Program?
Class Pass makes field trips possible by providing free transportation to local schools on regularly scheduled Wheels buses. In fact, we’d like to BE your next field trip to help your students learn about the many benefits of public transportation, like reducing your carbon footprint and how riding transit contributes to cleaner, healthier air!
You can request two Class Passes per year.
Yes. The following must apply to your free Class Pass trip:
- Group must use regularly scheduled Wheels transit buses and designated bus stops
- Trip must be taken during off-peak hours, Monday – Friday, between 9 AM and 2 PM
- Class Pass is good only on Wheels buses
- Maximum people allowed per Class Pass is 35 + chaperones
- Passage on any other transportation system is not included
Groups of more than 35 will be divided into two separate groups which depart at different times and may differ as much as one hour depending on route.
- What if two groups end up on the same bus?
- Wheels tries to coordinate all groups so that not more than one group plans to ride on the same bus. We do this to help your trip go smoothly and to ease overcrowding. You can help by following the instructions included in your field trip itinerary. We also notify bus operators of a group’s travel plans so they can be prepared to assist you.
- What if I need to cancel my Class Pass?
- If your plans change, we will gladly re-schedule your trip for another day at no charge. Please call the Wheels Class Pass Coordinator at (925) 455-7500.
On request, we offer a classroom presentation designed to help build a positive attitude toward public transit while presenting students with ideas on how to be a better bus rider.
What is covered in a classroom presentation?
The economic, environmental, and social issues of our transportation choices and their effects on our daily lives are discussed. The mechanics of taking the bus are covered in detail.
Sounds great! How do I get started?

Following these simple steps will ensure that your trip goes smoothly:
- First, get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
- Make sure your group is waiting in the “Safe Zone”, away from the curb and street.
- When the bus pulls up, confirm that it’s the bus you want to board by checking the sign above the windshield.
- Upon boarding, show the operator your free Class Pass and tell him or her how many are in your group.
- Assist your group in finding seats quickly. If you have to stand, hold on to the handrails.
- Encourage your group to observe good bus etiquette so all passengers can enjoy the ride.
- Watch for the stop where you need to off-board and signal the operator a couple of blocks before you reach it. When possible, exit through the back doors, then move quickly into the “Safe Zone”.
